Cruise down the Pan-American Highway to Usulutan. Appreciate spectacular views of the lake of Ilopango, and pass through the quaint and picturesque towns of San Sebastián and San Vicente. The impressive volcano Chichontepec lies along the highway; you´ll be astounded by nature´s power as you take in the impressive panoramic view of the valley of Jiboa. Continue your overland journey as you cross the largest river of El Salvador, the Lempa.
Climb up to and above the Sierra of Chinameca to arrive at the city of Alegría. This incredible town was named in honor of the Presbyterian José Miguel Alegría, a renowned Latin professor who founded a school of Philosophy in the town of Tecapa around 1838. In 1891 the name of the town of Tecapa was renamed Alegria, and becomes the city you´ll visit today. Visit the local Parish, constructed in 1870, final resting place of the remains of this famous professor. As you walk through the town, visit its central park where the monument to the distinguished teacher stands. You will also have the opportunity to visit the home of one of El Salvador´s most distinguished teacher and thinker, Don Alberto Masferrer, as well as the home of the former president Manuel Enrique Araujo.
Your trip isn´t over yet! Visit the Volcano Tecapa, meaning “lake of stones.” Within the crater of this volcano hides a beautiful small lagoon of sulphuric waters called Laguna de Alegría. Return to San Salvador via the panoramic Coastal Highway, appreciating a gorgeous view of the bay of Jiquilisco on your return trip.
