Immerse yourself in history at Joya de Cerén, the greatest Latin American archaeological discovery of the last 50 years. The site, a Mayan village displaying artifacts and evidence of Mayan culture, was preserved by nature when it was buried under ashes of the eruption of a volcano. For this reason Joya de Ceren is known as the Pompeii of the Americas, and was declared a Patrimony of Humanity site by UNESCO.

After exploring the archaeological wonders, move on to San Andrés, a pre-Columbian ceremonial center, where you can appreciate several ancient semi-excavated pyramids, as well as the historical museum. Next visit the colonial city of Santa Ana, whose historical center with its majestic gothic cathedral, constructed in the early-1900s. The Theatre and the Municipal Palace are also incredible structures at this location, dating back to the late-1800s. We will have lunch in a pleasant restaurant of the city. Known as “Heroic City” or “Brown City,” learn the history behind these names and the influence that coffee exportation from this city has had in the economy of the country.
