Begin with Joya de Cerén, a Mayan village exemplifying how a typical ancient settlement existed. It was preserved when it was buried under ashes of the eruption of a volcano, which is why it is known as the Pompeii of the Americas. Joya de Cerén has even been declared a Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO!
Continue to San Andrés, a pre-Columbian ceremonial center containing several ancient semi-excavated pyramids, beautiful hilly landscape, and historical museum. After exploring San Andres, relax over lunch in a pleasant restaurant overlooking the Coatepeque Lake. After lunch, we will travel to Chalchuapa. This incredible attraction is also known in the nahuat language as “Pokomame”, meaning “Place where the little jade abounds”. Here visit the archaeological site El Tazumal and its majestic pyramids. Listen to the history of the inhabitants and don´t miss the opportunity to see ancient Mayan artifacts at the site´s museum.
Near El Tazumal you´ll be able to shop for replicas of original archaeological pieces before continuing your journey to Casa Blanca, where you can explore more history at the museum and the school of indigo.
