Destination Overview
Bali is a province in the Republic of Indonesia. This tiny island of nearly three million Hindus has long been the jewel in the crown of Indonesian tourism, and with good reason. It is difficult to imagine an island with scenery and culture more idyllic. When the first Dutch war ship arrived in Bali in the late 16th century, the entire crew abandoned ship and took up residence on the island, refusing to go back to sea. They had found paradise. The island itself is only 144km long by 80km wide, yet despite the enormous growth of tourism in recent years the Balinese have maintained a strong cultural identity. The Balinese have absorbed the changes to their island rather than changed with them.
