For 114 years, the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway (the world’s highest cog railroad) has taken passengers to the 14,110 foot summit of the magnificent mountain.
At 8.9 miles, the round trip lasts 3 hours and 10 minutes. The first third of our trip runs along Ruxton Creek in Englemann Canyon through dense stands of evergreen trees.
Next up is "Hell Gate", a natural gateway in the mountains - be sure to keep your eyes open for grazing mule deer. Also, catch the first glimpse of Pikes Peak as you pass over the Four Mile Switch.
At about the 5 mile point, we begin climbing in earnest, and many of the trees in this area are bristlecone pines, some of the oldest living things on earth! It is estimated that some trees on Pikes Peak are over 2000 years old.
Once we climb above timberline (the elevation at which trees stop growing), the views become more expansive. Weather permitting, youll see the Great Plains, the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Range, the Collegiate Range, and the old mining towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. Once upon the summit, you can see the skyscrapers of downtown Denver.
At the summit of Pikes Peak, well rest for 30 to 40 minutes, allowing you to enjoy the gorgeous views from the top, and buy gifts or get something to eat from the Summit House, Cog Railway Cafe.
