There are about 1,500 million bicycles in the world of which about 600 million are in China. In Beijing there are 1.6 bicycles per family, double that of rural areas and the highest ratio in China’s major cities… so Beijing really is a ‘City of Bicycles’. So let’s see the city on the back of a bike, much like the locals do everyday. Starting at the Legation Quarters, the Embassy district in imperial times, you will head towards Tiananmen Square stopping along the way to view some of the Old Embassy buildings, St Michael’s Church, the Supreme Court of China and then onto Tiananmen Square. After the Square, a stop in the Museum of Imperial History where laid out in the foyer is a relief of Old Beijing. This adds perspective to the ride you are undertaking. Riding along the length of the Forbidden City Wall till you see the North East Tower where you head west and reach the Jing Shan Park.
