Hugging the coast on the northwest side of the island is the village of Hanga Roa, Easter Island's capital and most inhabited part of the island. The tour starts with a visit of the handicraft market, where many curious objects made of carved wood and shells from the Rapa Nui culture may be found.

Our next stop will be the Anthropological Museum Sebastian Englert, which owes its name to a German priest who dedicated his life to improving conditions on Rapa Nui people. The museum provides an excellent summary of the history of Easter Island and its way of life, and also has displays about its native flora and fauna. Here, too, is one of the few female moai on the island, as well as a coral eye found during the reconstruction of an ahu at Playa Anakena. The tour continues with a visit of the Catholic Church, an example of the melting of two cultures, namely the Christian and the local indigenous one. The paintings displayed inside the church have a clear Rapa Nui flavor and one of the altars rests on a block of local volcanic stone.
