Seeing the Nazi Party rally grounds (Zeppelin Field) in ruins—neither razed nor preserved, but utterly neglected—was fascinating beyond description. Our guide gave us lots of info about Nürnberg and Münich that I couldn't find elsewhere. Every day I'd walked past the building in which Hans & Sophie Scholl, of the White Rose resistance, had been arrested for distributing leaflets. I didn't know it until our guide pointed out the site as we drove past. I went there the next day. The building is still used for university classes and has no sign outside indicating its significance, although the plaza in front of the building is named for the Scholl siblings. Turns out there's a nice little museum tucked away in the basement, as well as a memorial in the atrium and a brass marker at the site where Sophie Scholl tossed a stack of fliers over the third-floor balcony. Thanks for a memorable experience.

ITINERARY

Nuremberg - the name brings to mind emperors and medieval councils, the Reformation and Albrecht Dürer, but at the same time reminds us of Nazi party rallies and the Nuremberg trials. The historic old town with its mighty castle and city walls, its many churches, monuments and picturesque half-timbered houses still show the glamour of the old imperial city. The Nazis also erected monumental structures there that to this day show the megalomania of Hitler and the leaders of the “Third Reich”. The Documentation Center provides a comprehensive insight into this dark era of German history.
