Gray Line Mexico City Insider Tips

Things to do in Mexico City
1. Start at the Zócalo Before Exploring Further

Begin your Mexico City sightseeing at the Zócalo, then explore the Metropolitan Cathedral’s exterior and surrounding historic streets on foot. If you’re using Capital Bus, the Zócalo–5 de Mayo stop connects all three sightseeing circuits. Exchange your reservation for a wristband before boarding, bring matching official identification, and choose your next neighbourhood before setting off.

2. Listen to Live Mariachi Music

Hear traditional mariachi music performed by talented local musicians in the heart of Mexico City. Plaza Garibaldi is one of the best places to watch live performances, admire traditional outfits and connect with the city’s vibrant musical culture.

3. Give Chapultepec Castle Time in Your Itinerary

Set aside time for Chapultepec Castle’s National Museum of History rather than squeezing it between several bus stops. The museum recommends at least 90 minutes inside and closes on Mondays. Wear comfortable shoes for exploring Chapultepec, and plan admission separately from your sightseeing bus pass. Prioritise the historic rooms and murals before continuing through the park.

4. Watch Mexican Wrestling at Arena México

Book tickets for an energetic lucha libre match at Arena México, one of Mexico City’s most famous entertainment venues. Expect colourful masks, dramatic moves, theatrical rivalries and a lively atmosphere filled with passionate local fans cheering for their favourite wrestlers.

5. Book Casa Azul Before Planning Your Coyoacán Visit

Reserve your Frida Kahlo Museum ticket online before building a day around Coyoacán; Casa Azul does not sell tickets at the door. The hop-on hop-off Centro–Sur circuit includes a Museo Frida Kahlo stop, but museum admission is separate. Allow generous travel time for your booked entry, then explore Coyoacán’s central squares and cafés afterwards.

6. Plan a Respectful Visit to the Basilica of Guadalupe

Use the Templos sightseeing circuit to reach the Basilica of Guadalupe, then allow time to appreciate the modern basilica and surrounding religious complex. Dress modestly, keep your voice low and respect worshippers during services. Check the return bus schedule before exploring further: this circuit has longer intervals than the Centro–Polanco route, so a missed departure can reshape your day.

7. Visit Plaza Garibaldi for an Independent Mariachi Outing

Make Plaza Garibaldi a separate outing if you want to linger around Mexico City’s mariachi scene. Before requesting a song, agree the price and number of songs directly with the musicians. Plan your return transport independently for an evening visit; the daytime hop-on hop-off service should not be relied on for a late-night journey back.

8. Combine the Tequila and Mezcal Museum with Garibaldi

Pair Plaza Garibaldi with the Museo del Tequila y el Mezcal to explore how agave becomes two distinctive Mexican spirits. Focus on the production displays before deciding whether to add a tasting. Check current opening times, admission and tasting arrangements directly with the museum, and budget separately: the hop-on hop-off pass provides transport, not a museum package.

9. Explore Mexico City from Three Rooftop Terraces

Set aside six hours for a rooftop tour combining Mexico City’s Historic Centre and Paseo de la Reforma. Visit three terraces with a guide, photograph the city from above and enjoy an included beverage at each stop. Bring a hat and sunscreen for the open-top bus journeys, and budget separately for food or extra drinks.

10. Fit a Taco Stop into Your Mexico City Plans

Build a taco stop into your sightseeing day and try a small order before choosing more fillings or salsas. Ask what each taco contains and which sauces are hottest. For an organised evening combining food and entertainment, the Mexican Night Tour with Wrestling includes tacos and snacks before Arena México; raise any dietary requirements with the operator before booking.
