Gray Line Bucharest's Insider Tips

Things to do in Bucharest
1. Learn About Palace of the Parliament’s Controversial Construction

One of the most significant and controversial landmarks in the country of Romania, the Palace of the Parliament was constructed by Nicolae Ceausescu — a former communist leader — and a team of over 700 architects in 1984 and declared complete in 1997. As one of the world’s largest administrative buildings, the palace covers a 365,000 square meter area and boasts approximately 1,100 separate rooms. As a result of its massive size, the Palace of the Parliament is also widely considered one of the heaviest buildings anywhere on Earth and weighs in around 9 billion pounds. Notable rooms include the Grand Reception Hall, Chamber of Deputies, and Senate Hall. An architectural mix of local Romanian and international art features, the site’s building materials by and large stemmed from local resources with a particular emphasis on marble from the Carpathian Mountains. Thousands of private residences were forcibly demolished during the palace’s construction, which led to widespread displacement, a ballooning national debt, and a sense of bitterness that exists within the Romanian population to this day.

2. Take a Walk in Old Town (The Lipscani District)

Referred to colloquially as the Lipscani District or Old Town, this section of Bucharest dates back to the 15th century when it gained prominence as a commercial hub for textile and leather merchants. Along with more modern institutions like the National Museum of Romanian History, Old Town is also home to older cultural treasures, including the Stavropoleos Church. For visitors eager to try some authentic cuisine or purchase a one-of-a-kind souvenir, the Lipscani District regularly hosts in-person events, live performances, and food festivals that allow Old Town to exert its sense of community and togetherness just as it has for generations before now. Tackling the Lipscani District on foot instead of vehicle or horseback is the best way to get around with ease and ensure that you don’t miss any of Bucharest’s urban landmarks or attractions.

3. Explore the National Museum of Art of Romania

Situated in Bucharest’s former Royal Palace near Revolution Square, the National Museum of Art of Romania officially opened in 1950. The museum is home to collections that stem from the Middle Ages to contemporary art pieces, including prominent works by artists like Nicolae Grigorescu, Theodor Aman, and Ion Andreescu. Its European art section showcases paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance to the 20th century, with memorable exhibits dedicated to Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and Monet. Depending on when you visit, you might get to see a temporary exhibition, educational program, or cultural event.

4. Get Inspired at the Cişmigiu Gardens

Established in the mid-19th century, Cismigiu Gardens was designed by the Austrian landscape architect Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer. Initially, this landmark was created as a private garden for the aristocracy, but it was later opened to the public. With winding paths, lakes, and a variety of trees and flowers, the park combines natural beauty with intentional artistic elements, including statues and fountains. Rent a rowboat on the artificial lake or visit one of the many playgrounds on the site. You’ll be in the company of many Romanian writers and poets, who have claimed inspiration from their time in the gardens.

5. Step Into the Past at the Village Museum (Muzeul Satului)

An open-air museum found in Herastrau Park in northern Bucharest, the Village Museum showcases what traditional life in a Romanian village looks like. Founded in 1936 by Dimitrie Gusti, a prominent Romania sociologist and ethnographer, the institution features over 300 authentic peasant houses, churches, and other structures from various regions of Romania. The intended goal is to present the diverse architectural styles and cultural traditions of the country. 6. Check Out the Triumph Arch

The Triumph Arch is a prominent landmark located in the northern part of Bucharest along an intersection for several major roads. The original wooden arch was built in 1921 to commemorate Romania’s Great Union of 1918, which was a defining unification event for the nation of Romania. The arch stands at 89 feet and is designed in a neoclassical style. Doing double duty as a monument to Romanian soldiers, the arch also represents those who fought and died in World War I. The Triumph Arch is frequently the site of national celebrations, including military parades and other public events. Visit nearby Kiseleff Park during your excursion!

7. Marvel at the Dacian Treasures at the National History Museum of Romania

One of the country’s most important cultural institutions, the National History Museum of Romania was founded in 1970, although its roots trace back further to previous collections. The museum features an impressive array of prehistoric artifacts, including items from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age. The famous Dacian gold and silver treasures are a popular exhibit, and medieval items — including weapons, coins, and religious items — reveal the long history of settlements around Bucharest. The History of Money display is also a fascinating walkthrough of how currency has evolved in Romania over the decades.

8. Take the Family to Herăstrău Park

Officially known as King Michael I Park, Herastrau Park can be found in northern Bucharest near the lake of the same name. Covering about 462 acres, the park is one of the largest green spaces in the city and a favorite haunt of residents. Centered around its large artificial body of water, visitors can go boating and participate in a variety of watersports between strolling on the many walking paths and trails that surround the lake. The Village Museum is located at Herastrau Park, and several playgrounds are available for little ones to burn some energy off.

9. Tour the Mogoșoaia Palace

Found about 10 kilometers northwest of Bucharest, Mogosoaia Palace was built between 1698 and 1702 by Prince Constantin Brancoveanu, who was known for several Romanian monuments and artistic projects. A prime example of Brancovenesc design, the building features architectural elements from the Byzantine, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The palace served as a summer residence for the Brancoveanu family and has remained a significant cultural and political center throughout Bucharest’s history. Significant events that occurred at the palace include the imprisonment and eventual execution of its designer and his aristocratic sons by the Ottoman Empire. Walk through the expansive French and English gardens and admire the Throne Room and Hall of Honor indoors.

10. Visit the Stavropoleos Monastery

Established in 1724 by a Greek monk named Ioanichie Stratonikeas, the Stavropoleos Monastery was intended as a place of worship and refuge for the Orthodox Christian community in the area. The main church features a beautiful facade adorned with ornate carvings and a bell tower. As a significant player in Bucharest's spiritual and cultural life through the centuries, the monastery was damaged during WWII and recently restored to its current state. Rest in the tranquil courtyard and admire the small library filled with manuscripts and historical documents.
