Gray Line Guatemala City Insider Tips

Things to do in Guatemala City
1. Learn About the Mayan Civilization at Tikal National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in the Petรฉn region of northern Guatemala, Tikal National Park is home to the ancient Maya city of Tikal, which flourished between approximately 600 BC and 900 CE. With monumental pyramids and intricate stone artwork, Tikal was estimated to have housed a population of around 100,000 at its height. This staggering number (particularly for the time period) made it a crucial location for regional trade networks and political alliances. Explore the Temple of the Great Jaguar and Temple of the Masks along with the rest of this amazing ancient city!

2. Visit the Centuries-Old Colonial City of Antigua

Antigua is a charming colonial city located in the central highlands of Guatemala. Renowned for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, the city boasts cobblestone streets, bustling markets, and stunning views of the many surrounding volcanoes, including the active Volcรกn de Fuego. Founded in 1543, โ€œSantiago de los Caballerosโ€ served as the capital of Spainโ€™s Guatemala colony for over two centuries. Although the area suffered a catastrophic earthquake in 1773, many of the original Spanish Baroque buildings, landmarks, and walking pathways survived extensive damage. Antigua is also a popular launching point for exploring the nearby volcanos and as a shopping center.

3. Experience the Awe-Inspiring Beauty of Lake Atitlรกn

Lake Atitlรกn is a stunning volcanic lake situated about 5,125 feet (1,562 meters) above sea level. It is frequently described as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, particularly due to the three towering volcanoes โ€” San Pedro, Atitlรกn, and Tolimรกn โ€” that serve as its backdrop. With an area of about 49.3 square miles (127.7 square kilometers), the name โ€œAtitlรกnโ€ translates to โ€œthe place where the rainbow gets its colors.โ€ Several indigenous Mayan communities still live in the area, and each village surrounding the lake retains its unique cultural identity, language, clothing, and customs. The village of Panajachel is commonly considered the gateway to the lake and offers a good spot to grab a meal before exploring further.

4. Heat Things Up with a Hike to Pacaya Volcano

Located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Guatemala City, the Pacaya Volcano is one of Central Americaโ€™s most active volcanoes. With regular eruptions and geothermal activity, this literal โ€˜hotspotโ€™ is available for guided tours โ€” a safety requirement for all guests interested in getting up close and personal with the mountain. Admire the hardened lava fields, scenic views of the surrounding area, and interspersed greenery during your hike. Depending on your tour, you may even get the chance to roast some marshmallows over the geothermal vents!

5. Enjoy the Natural Beauty of Semuc Champey

Semuc Champey is a breathtaking natural wonder located in the Alta Verapaz region of Guatemala. Featuring a series of turquoise pools formed along a limestone bridge, this spot above the Cahabรณn River is surrounded by a lush jungle and a wide variety of wildlife. Formed by natural limestone deposits and mineral-rich waters, the pools themselves are of varying depths and available to eager swimmers. The name โ€œSemuc Champeyโ€ translates from the Mayan language to โ€œwhere the river hides under the earth.โ€ For the more adventurous, try a tubing adventure along the Cahabรณn River or go exploring in some of the regionโ€™s limestone caves.

6. Do Some Shopping at the Historical Chichicastenango Market

Known locally as Chichi, the Chichicastenango Market is one of the largest and most vibrant of its kind in Central America. Typically, visitors can find it in the highlands of Guatemala every Thursday and Sunday. Attracting thousands of locals and tourists on a regular basis, the market is also a cultural hub that reflects the rich heritage of the K'iche' Maya people. Although the Chichicastenango Market served as a trading hub before the Spanish even arrived in Guatemala, it has evolved into a synthesis of European and Mayan traditions that live on to this day. Find handmade textiles, wooden carvings, and jewelry from the hundreds of vendors that represent the regionโ€™s deep-rooted artisanal legacy.

7. Mingle with the Garifuna in Livingston

At the mouth of the Rio Dulce โ€” a beautiful river in its own right โ€” lies a gorgeous coastal town on Guatemalaโ€™s Caribbean coast called Livingston. With the majority of its population made up of the Garifuna peoples, Livingston has a unique origin story matched by few other places in the world. The Garifuna are descendants of enslaved people from Africa who shipwrecked in the Caribbean and the native Caribbean islanders that intermixed with them. This cultural blend has resulted in a community that celebrates music, dance, and cuisine. One standout Garifuna dish is tapado, a hearty seafood stew made with coconut milk, fish, and other ingredients. Only accessible from the mainland via boat, a visit to Livingston is a must-do for travelers wanting to experience a truly one-of-a-kind place in Guatemala.

8. Watch the Sunset on Flores Island

Located on Lake Petรฉn Itzรก in northern Guatemala, Flores Island is well-known for its colonial-era architecture, colorful buildings, and narrow cobblestone streets. As the primary gateway to the archaeological site of Tikal, Flores is a popular stop for travelers interested in seeing the structural achievements of the ancient Mayan civilization. Once the capital of the Itzรก Maya kingdom, Flores played a critical role in resisting Spanish conquistadors in the late 17th-century. Today, tourists are able to walk around the entire island in less than one hour and can experience stunning sunsets along its western shores. Sample some of its local cuisine, including delicacies like pupusas and tapado while youโ€™re there.

9. Hike Over Ancient Mayan Ground to El Mirador

Deep within the jungles of Guatemala lies El Mirador, an ancient Mayan city known for hosting the largest pyramid (based on volume) in the world: La Danta. Typically less crowded than other more popular sites like Tikal, El Mirador is an off-the-beaten-path gem for ambitious travelers. Spanning about five days, hikers can travel approximately 60 miles (100 kilometers) through dense jungle to the site via guided tour. For a less physically demanding option, helicopter tours are also available. Explore the famous pyramid along with other important historical sites, including the Central Acropolis, El Tigre Temple, and Los Monos Pyramid.

10. Book an Eco-Tour at Monterrico

With stunning black sand beaches, diverse wildlife, and a lively atmosphere, Monterrico was once a small fishing village now transformed into a popular ecotourism destination. A great spot for surfing, the areaโ€™s beaches are perfect for sunbathing, beach walks, and sunset watching. Engage in several tours that put Guatemalaโ€™s amazing ecosystems on display, including a guided night observation of nesting sea turtles laying their eggs.
