Gray Line New York insider tips

Things to do in New York
1. Make the most of your time with a hop-on hop-off bus tour

Hop on a bus tour to take in all the sites of the big city. Your legs will thank you for not walking miles. Gray Line’s famous open-top bus tour takes you to all the New York sights and you can hop off at any time to explore. You’ll be taken through Times Square to the Empire State Building and across the famous Brooklyn Bridge, as well as much more. Check out the Hop-On Hop-Off Downtown pass or the Uptown pass. However, to get the most out of the city you should get the combined pass and see more than 40 New York sights throughout Uptown and Downtown Manhattan with this NYC hop-on hop-off tour. Switching between the two double-decker routes is easy.

2. Take a stroll through Central Park

Central Park is a beautiful park located in the heart of the city. You'll take in stunning views of the city and pretend you’re in a movie. It's a great place to have a leisurely walk, bike ride or take a romantic horse and carriage past the large lakes. Central Park is full of entertainment too so you won’t be bored, but if you’re looking for some peace and quiet you can stop by the model boat pond and watch the world go by.

3. See a Broadway show

One of the most famous streets in the world, Broadway is the heart of New York City's theater district. It's home to some of the most famous theaters and shows in the world. Whether you're a fan of musicals or plays, want to catch the most popular shows or find something up and coming, you're sure to find something you'll love. Remember that Broadway shows don't come cheap but you can get lucky by buying a ticket on the same day when they’re heavily discounted.

4. Take a boat ride on the Hudson River

One of the best ways to see New York City is to take a boat ride on the Hudson River. A boat will take you past the Lightship Frying Pan and the USS Intrepid, now a sea, air and space museum. You'll see the Manhattan skyline from the water, One World Trade Center and can get an up-close look at the Statue of Liberty.

5. Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known as the Met, is possibly the most famous museum in the world and is known for hosting the most prestigious parties. The Met was founded in 1870 and contains art from across the world, including pieces by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Vermeer. It holds approximately two million works across its 17 departments, so be prepared to spend a whole day taking as much as you can in.

6. Take a trip to Times Square

Times Square is a bustling, brightly lit and vibrant area that's located in the heart of New York. Famous for its billboards, it’s also at the center of the city’s theater district. You’ll be able to find a huge range of entertainment here, whether you’re looking for a musical, play, or street performance. You can also find many of the latest superheroes, so the kids can get a picture with their favorite. There’s excellent food to find nearby, and, if you visit close to midnight, you’ll discover a light show on the billboards. If you’re in New York during the holiday season, you can’t miss the famous New Year's Eve ball drop too.

7. Take a trip to the High Line

The High Line is an elevated park built on an old railroad track. It opened in 2009 and has become many New Yorkers’ favorite location. On the 1.45-mile-long walk, you’ll spot much of the city’s iconic architecture from above and there’s plenty of art to see along the way. While elevated, there are a number of accessible entries for those with mobility issues.

8. Visit the Statue of Liberty

The iconic Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous landmarks in New York City. The statue was a gift from the French and was built by Gustave Eiffel, who is better known for the Eiffel Tower in Paris and celebrates freedom and democracy in the United States and the abolition of slavery. You can see the statue up close and take a tour of Liberty Island, and it's the perfect place to teach the kids the history of the nation. Many ferries to the statue also visit Ellis Island where many immigrants first set foot in the States.

9. Visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum is a powerful and moving tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks. At Ground Zero, underneath One World Trade Center lie the memorial pools and the museum. The tranquil pools fill the foundations of the World Trade Center and are a place to reflect on the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. You can stand under the Survivor Tree which was recovered from the rubble and visit the museum to remember the victims and hear their stories. It’s an emotional experience.

10. Try some traditional New York pizza

Don’t tell people from Chicago, but New York pizza is the best on this side of the Atlantic. You'll be able to find it at almost any pizzeria in the city, but we have some recommendations. You need to start to queue at 4 to get a table at Lucali’s, but there’s nothing like it. Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop is a diner with perfect pizza for $5. Squeeze into Amore Pizzeria for a piping-hot pizza straight out of the oven. Here’s a tip: in New York each slice is huge, so fold it for easier eating.
