1. Explore Bogor Botanical Gardens

Bogor Botanical Gardens are some of the oldest in the world, and their history stretches even further. It was founded by Dutch colonists in 1817, with the help of Kew Gardens in London. The gardens were created on a man-made forest that had been administered by the Sunda Kingdom. They used this to grow and protect seeds. The gardens are huge and hold 3,373 species of trees and plants with 13,983 specimens.

2. Meet the Puppet Maker of Bogor

The Puppet Maker of Bogor has become a legend in the city for his masterful work. Pak Dase lives in a small house in one of the city’s poorer areas and has been making rod puppets for 40 years. His family have been making them for generations. These otherwordly marionettes are carved from local wood and known as Wayang Golek. They are used to tell the ancient myths of the region.

3. Learn an Ancient Trade at the Gong Factory

Bogor’s Gong Factory is the home of a skill that could soon be lost. The factory dates to 1820 and handcrafts gongs out of bronze. Bogor used to be full of workshops creating these musical instruments. The Gong Factory is the last one left. The bronze is heated in a kiln and then hammered into shape by two people. Here you’ll get an insight into this ancient expertise.

4. Cool Down in One of the Many Waterfalls

Stunning waterfalls surround Bogor. They are the perfect place to cool off and have a swim in the plunge pools and under the cascades. Usually, they are a short hike from the car park and some have experiences, such as ziplining, to enjoy. Leuwi Hejo, Putri Kencana and the 164-foot-tall Bidadari are some of the most famous and easy to reach. If you want to find one that is untouched, try the hike through the fields to Cikaracak.

5. Examine the Architecture and Art of Bogor Palace

In the Botanical Gardens, you will find Bogor Presidential Palace. It is one of six in Indonesia. This palace was originally the summer retreat of the Dutch governors and was built in 1744. The palace was built in a distinctive style, known as Indies Empire, which is uniquely Dutch but adapted to the Indonesian climate. The interior is decorated with the art collection of Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, which holds almost 900 pieces. Bogor Palace is surrounded by several delightful pavilions.

6. See Endangered Animals at Mount Gede Pangrango National Park

Bogor is surrounded by National Parks to explore. One of the most important is Mount Gede Pangrango. More than 250 different species of bird may be spotted here, including some of the most endangered. Silvery gibbons, Javan surili and Javan leopards also call the park home. The park is found on two volcanoes — Gede and Pangrango — that are covered in beautiful rainforest.

7. Visit the Temple of Pura Parahyangan

The Hindu temple of Pura Parahyangan can be found on the slopes of Mount Salak. The temple itself was started in 1995 and has yet to be completed. Despite being so recent, it is built on sacred ground. It stands on what is thought to have been the location of Pakuan Pajajaran, the capital of the Sunda Kingdom. This was one of the last Hindu kingdoms in Indonesia.

8. Traverse the Cloud Forest in Halimun Salak National Park

Halimun Salak National Park is ginormous and much of it is still unexplored. Like Mount Gede Pangrango, it holds two mountains, Salak and Halimun, which have different ecosystems. Halimun rises to 6,329 feet above sea level and is covered in cloud forest. 5,300 Kasepuhan Banten Kidul people call the park home. This is a traditional Sundanese community that can trace its history back to the Sunda Kingdom.

9. Taste Delicious Flavors at the Farms

From durian to dragon fruit, pineapple to tea, Bogor is surrounded by farms cultivating the incredibly fertile land. Many can be visited and offer different experiences depending on what you are looking for. Some are aimed at entertaining families with children, while others are full of more adventurous activities, such as ziplining. There are also more traditional, organic, and specialist farms to see. At each, you will find delicious flavors.
